Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging at Stanley

The DEIB Committee is a group of stakeholders who meet monthly to discuss school wide themes related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. They support the staff and students in efforts to expand our education, awareness, and understanding through exposure to more representation and experiences, to develop a compassionate and proactive community, towards bettering the world around us.

The DEIB Committee hosts Stanley’s Culture Night, which will be on the evening of September 25, 2025. This is a fun event to kick off the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, and celebrate our incredible community.  Families and students volunteer and showcase their own personal family traditions and culture, with food trucks, music, dancing, and more!

LAFSD Celebrates

I’m excited to introduce you to  “LAFSD Celebrates” - a set of teaching resources for our monthly heritage celebrations that we hope will help students see themselves reflected in the classroom and learn about the other cultures and identities.

I would love to share more.  As you know, LAFSD is a vibrant and growing community, rich with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and languages. It is a long-time value of ours that all of our students, families, and staff feel safe, welcome, and valued in our schools. There are many ways that we do this, of course - including, above all else, teaching about respect, kindness, and human dignity.

To go a step further than these important universal values, we can join in the monthly acknowledgments of our country’s diversity. It means holding up the value that we all share so much in common, and we all have aspects of our identity that make us unique. We create a deliberate, regular way in all our classrooms for learning, discussion, and curiosity. For ourselves as educators, committing to these monthly recognitions is also an opportunity for ongoing learning. Really, everyone benefits.

To learn more about LAFSD Celebrates, you are very welcome to visit our website, where you can see our schedule of celebrations for the year, review lessons for the month of August (more are on the way), and leave us feedback about this exciting work-in-progress.

Thank you for joining me to celebrate Lafayette. Together, we can create an inclusive and supportive environment for our entire community.

Warmly,

Brent Stephens
